FLORIDA has declared a state of emergency as Tropical Storm Isaac slams the southern US state.

The Category One hurricane has already wreaked havoc on Haiti's southern peninsula, causing three deaths as torrential conditions battered the impoverished nation.

Offshore oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of
Mexico have been forced to shut down ahead of the storm, affecting almost half of America’s offshore oil capacity and over a third of its natural gas output.

The Republican Party has cancelled the first day of its national convention in Florida after the hurricane tore through the Caribbean and threatened to strike the political gathering in Tampa.

Authorities have urged vacationers to flee the Florida Keys as Isaac approaches today and Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency.
