Edinson Cavani has criticised Liverpool over their handling of the Luis Suarez transfer saga.

Suarez is at the centre of one of the close-season's biggest transfer battles, with the player seeking an exit and Arsenal having had two bids rejected, while Liverpool continue to stand firm that he will not be sold.

The striker is desperate to depart Anfield and claims that he was promised he could leave if the Premier League side failed

Cesc Fabregas has been forced out of Spain's squad for the friendly against Ecuador after spraining ankle ligaments.

The Barcelona midfielder hobbled out of action in the 82nd minute of the 3-1 win over Malaysia on Saturday, having scored the opener and set up further goals for Neymar and GerardPique.

The 26-year-old was assessed by doctors on Sunday after arriving back in Spain, with the Liga giants subsequently confirming that

David Moyes dedicated Manchester United's 2-0 Community Shield victory over Wigan on Sunday to Old Trafford predecessor Alex Ferguson.

In his first competitive match as United manager, Moyes lifted the club's 20th Community Shield after a Robin van Persie double sunk the FA Cup winners.

Moyes has not had the best start to his United career, seeing his side win only one of their pre-season games, but they found their form to easily beat Owen Coyle's Championship side.

Van Persie's first goal was the highlight of the match, his perfectly placed header giving Scott Carson no chance, with his second coming via a deflection off James Perch in the second half.

However, Moyes was hesitant to take too much credit for winning the first

Cristiano Ronaldo offered a touching tribute to Rio Ferdinand ahead of the testimonial staged at Old Trafford for the Manchester United centre-back.

Ferdinand was awarded the prestigious event after 10 glorious years with the Red Devils, although the encounter with Sevilla on Friday night ended in defeat for the Red Devils.

The 34-year-old insisted the match was treated as a serious pre-season friendly rather than an opportunity for former Manchester United stars to pull on the famous jersey once again, meaning Ronaldo was not afforded the chance to feature alongside Ferdinand again.

The Real Madrid superstar, however, waxed lyrical about Ferdinand in the official matchday programme, praising the professionalism and affability of 'one of the greatest players' Manchester United have ever had.
"10 years have gone by since I signed for United and today, as a Real Madrid player, I want to talk about one of the greatest

A couple of weeks before the start of the English Premier League season, the country's most exciting player, its most reviled and the linchpin of the England side are involved in emotional and financial tug-of-wars with their clubs.

Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney have been absent from recent pre-season friendlies because they are carrying injuries, are in no state to perform or have been banished from the first team.

Winner of last season's English player of the year awards, Tottenham's Bale has been dazzled by the chance to join Real Madrid, the most

David Moyes is considering a bid for Luka Modric now that Manchester United's pursuit of Barcelona's Cesc Fábregas appears over, with the manager a long-term admirer of the Real Madrid playmaker.

With the 27-year-old having been transferred to Real from Tottenham Hotspur for £33m last summer, any initial offer for Modric would have to be in the region of £25m for a midfielder who fell down the pecking order under José Mourinho, who was his coach until the Portuguese rejoined Chelsea in the close season.

Moyes has made the purchase of a top-class goalscoring midfielder his priority this summer and was hopeful that

Luis Suárez is trying to move to Arsenal after the London club offered one pound over £40m for the Liverpool striker.

• Striker had intended to lodge transfer
request this week
• Uruguayan will not apologise over
alleged 'disrespect'

Luis Suárez will not tender transfer request yet in the wake of Liverpool's hard-line stance over his future. The Uruguayan striker had originally planned to do so before the end of this week if the Anfield club did not allow him to move to Arsenal. But Suárez's camp believe his position was made sufficiently clear in an interview with the Guardian and that there is no need to make a formal transfer request at the moment.

Liverpool's owner, John W Henry, angrily said after the interview that Suárez would not be leaving Liverpool to join any club, at any fee, despite the striker insisting he wanted to depart in order to play Champions League football.

Brendan Rodgers, themanager, accused Suárez of disrespecting the club and lying. Rodgers has forced Suárez to train with the youth team until he makes
