BlackBerry shareholder Prem Watsa might acquire the sinking Ontario-based company.
Watsa, referred as Canada's 'Warren Buffett' runs Fairfax Financial Holdings, which holds a 10 percent stake in BlackBerry, making it the company's largest shareholder.

According to the New York Post, Watsa is closing in on a rescue deal for BlackBerry and has already assembled billions in backing from Canada's largest pension funds for a bid.
The mobile manufacturing company and its advisers have scrambled to move ahead with a rapid sales process aimed at finding a buyer by November.

A new patent application filed by Microsoft would give parents ultimate, absolute control over their children’s smartphones and tablets.  Indeed, Big Brother is watching…but in a kind and loving way.  As the mobile market expands, so does the amount of people with devices.

More and more children are getting their hands on smartphones and tablets and Microsoft wants to appeal to parents seeking ways to monitor and control what their child uses their smartphone for.
NASA plan to launch an orbiter this week that will bring broadband capabilites to the moon. The orbiter, which is called the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE),has on board technology to enable two-way laser communication between the moon and Earth.

Nasa explained this technology by saying, “Using a small and lightweight telescope, LLCD will transmit hundreds of millions of laser pulses each second to one of three stations on Earth — each of which was chosen for its cloud-free skies.”

A British startup came under fire for using recycling bins to track people’s smartphones and identify their preferences in view of supporting personalized advertising.

A total of 12 smartphone tracking bins were installed across the UK capital by the startup, called Renew. But following several press reports on the matter and a complaint from a privacy campaign group, the City of London called on the company to stop using

3D printing technology is advancing in huge leaps, but most printers are still only able to create objects from only one type of material. The few printers that are able to print in multiple materials are excruciatingly slow and difficult to use.

But a new software pipeline developed by MIT researchers will make multi-material 3D printing a lot faster and easier, paving the way to creating objects of different texture and density practically in one go.

Windows phone users who want to watch funny cat videos on YouTube won’t be able to do it any time soon.

At least not until Microsoft and Google find a way to solve their long-running dispute over a Windows phone YouTube app.
The bitter row between the two giants began earlier this year and escalated last week when Google blocked a new YouTube Windows phone app just two days after it was released. Google, which owns YouTube, said the app violates its terms of service.

Before you jump off the deep end and have visions of “Beam me up Scotty” the research is nowhere near that advanced yet!  However, we are few steps closer than you may think, as scientists from Japan and Switzerland, have produced new research developments which “could change the very face of computing and technological security,” according to the National Journal.  The study of quantum teleportation is a process which uses the peculiarities of entangled quantum states in a pair of particles, such as photons, to transfer information from onelocation to another instantaneously.

Smartwatches are virtually everywhere these days, so in such a crowded market, it’s pretty difficult for any newcomer to get noticed. The Crossbow smartwatch from Swiss manufacturers Hyetis, however, is unlikely to have this problem.

The Hyetis smartwatch boasts some very impressive features and a stunning design that combines today’s taste for tech with

Harvard scientists have come up with a new way to create 3D images, which could have a significant impact on areas such as medical imaging and the 3D movie industry.

Unlike traditional 3D image generating methods, the new 3D technique relies solely on mathematics and computation, making do without special hardware and fancy lenses.

This new 3D technique could
eliminate the need of using 3D glasses at the movies.
The technique, developed by Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences researchers, uses

It seems the prospect of living on another planet is quite appealing to many: four months after registrations opened, more than 100,000 Mars One applicants have already signed up for a one-way trip to the Red Planet.

The Mars One project’s goal is to colonize Earth’s neighbor, starting in 2022, when the first crew is scheduled to take off. The first mission is expected to cost $6 billion, which organizers are hoping to raise from sponsors and media broadcasting rights for documenting the project.

In case you were wondering if Hollywood scenarios like the Armageddon could ever come to pass, NASA has just found an answer for you. In a recently unveiled map of potentially hazardous asteroids, the US Space Agency suggests those dangerous asteroids that are close to Earth’s orbit are several thousands.

The disconcerting map of the inner Solar System points to the orbits of 1,400 PHAs that are currently close to our planet. This is part of NASA’s Near Earth Objects program and it only includes asteroid bodies that are considered dangerous.

Why are these considered dangerous asteroids, you may ask? For one thing, there is the size issue as these bodies are all over

Baby monitors are designed to help parents keep their babies safe and provide peace of mind. However, it seems that nothing is safe in this world. It has been reported that a hacker was able to gain access to a baby monitor and verbally attack the sleeping child.

The parents, who are from Houston,
told ABC news that earlier this month the monitor they use was hacked. Once the hacker had gained control of the device, he proceeded to shout obscenities at their two year old daughter who was sleeping at the time. He then shouted at the parents as they unplugged the monitor.

The baby monitor was connected to the family’s Wi-Fi network. It is not clear which company made

Gartner’s latest quarterly smartphone figures are out, so we can find out who is winning in the battle and who is losing out in this highly competitive market.

It will come as no surprise that Samsung is still top dog. In the last three months it sold 107 million mobile phones, 71 million of them smartphones, worldwide. Even though the industry as a whole has grown, Samsung has managed to keep pace and hold on to its share of the market. For comparison, a year ago, Samsung sold 45 million smartphones and 90 millionmobile phones in total.

Whilst Samsung race ahead, Apple is beginning to lag behind a little. With the iPhone 5 not being as popular as anticipated, Apple takes second place selling 32 million smartphones. Whilst its competitors have seen smartphone sales almost double, Apple’s sales have only increased by about 3 million in the last year. Maybe with the upcoming release of the new phone, things will start to pick up again for the company.

For Nokia, the figures are not looking so good. The company sales are continuing to fall as not enough people are buying the Lumia Windows phone. The company failed to get

You don’t have enough time or money to donate in support of an important cause such as, say, AIDS research? Now there are other ways to help, with virtually no costs and no time-consumingtasks for you, as your smartphone will do all the work.

A new Android app allows smartphone and tablet users to donate their gadgets’ computing power for scientific research to fight AIDS. The combined power of all the donated gadgets will make up some sort of supercomputer that scientists will be able to use freely.

Smartphones fight AIDS with the help of an application called BOINC, short for

Have you ever borrowed your friends phone? to check your email for instance or maybe they have showed you a picture on their handset and you have noticed the greasy film on the screen left there by your friends seemingly normal and clean face? which then made you feel quite queasy.  If you have, then you will be well aware that touchscreen germ resistant technology is needed and therefore must be an escalating field!

In a battles over patented technology, Apple has won a key patent case against Samsung. After finding that Samsung had infringed Apple’s patents back in 2011, the US International Trade Commission (IS ITC) has upheld its decision.

Paypal billionaire Elon Musk, inset, has revealed plans for a radical new 'Hyperloop' transport system that could 'shoot' passengers from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes.

Travellers enter aluminium pods mounted by skis either to their feet or to their cars, top. The pods, mounted above the ground on columns 50 to 100 yards apart, travel through steel tubes, reaching speeds of up to 800mph and travelling on a cushion of air. These images, left and right, show sketches of the passenger transport capsule and how it would look travelling through the steel tubes. Continue...
