PTIRescuers search for survivors after a portion of Metro Rail project collapsed at Andheri-Kurla road in Mumbai on Tuesday.
One person was killed and eleven others were injured, three of whom seriously, when an under-construction over head Metro ail bridge collapsed along the Andheri-Kurla Road in north Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon.
While one person -- believed to be a
construction worker - died on his way to a nearby hospital, eleven others are undergoing treatment at the Seven Hills and Cooper hospitals.
“Of the six persons undergoing treatment here, the condition of three injured is very serious,” a spokesperson of the Seven Hills Hospital said.
The mishap took place at around 4.15 pm, when a huge slab of an under construction bridge located near Hotel Leela on the Andheri-Kurla road caved in. Before long, the fire brigadepersonnel, police and other rescued arrived on the scene and removed those trapped under the debris. The work was clearing the debris was going on till late in the evening.
The collapsed bridge is a part of the much-delayed 12-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor of the Mumbai Metro. It is on the busy and crowded Andheri-Kurla road that leading to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
Meanwhile, it has come to come light that RTI activist Anil Galgali had in July this year brought to the notice of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), thenodal agency for Mumbai Metro Rail Project, about the lack of safety measures at the under-construction bridge where the mishap took place on Tuesday afternoon.
“Apart from bringing to the authorities about the safety lapses at the bridge construction site, I had also given them a revealing photograph. Had the authorities looked into the matter, today’s mishap could have been avoided,” Galgali told The Pioneer on Tuesday evening.
Tuesday’s was the fourth mishap that has taken place at various Metro rail project construction sites during the last four years.
In the first of mishaps that took place in May 2008, one person was killed and another injured, when a pile rig collapsed at a construction site at Andheri (west).
Four persons were injured in a second such mishap that took at Andheri (east) in 2009, when a steel reinforcement cage and temporary scaffolding of a concrete pillar caved in.
In April this year, a huge crane being used for work at a construction site at Ghatkopar in north-east Mumbai, veered off a truck and crashed on a portion of the nearby Sarvodaya hospital.
However, no one was injured in the mishap as the affected portion of the hospital building was empty at that time.
