The U.S Patent and Trademark Office have received a patent that was filed by Samsung. It is listed as a Samsung Galaxy Gear and is clearly Samsung’s entry into the smartwatch market.

The trademark’s description is rather vague, specifying a “Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wristband, or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and sending and receiving phone calls, electronicmail, and messages”.

It looks like the smartwatch display will have touch controls and include features such as microUSB and a speaker.

The patent and images also seem to hint at the possibility of the Galaxy Gear having a bendable screen, which is no surprise since Samsung have already said that sooner or later its products will have a flexible display.

So far there is no hint as to whether Samsung’s smartwatch will run Android or a simpler operating system but the fact that it has been made part of the Galaxy family, could suggest that it may work exclusively with Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

Samsung have not disclosed any further details other than that they are planning to release a smartwatch.  Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said in an interview with Bloomberg: “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”
